French

The objective of this program is to have students reach and understanding of the language to a certain extent and to have them acquire certain knowledge of the French culture as well.  There are four difficult steps in learning a new language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  All four steps are introduced in a gradual and logical process in this program.

With the Preschool through first grade students, the work is mostly oral in nature.  Visual aids are used to introduce basic vocabulary like colors, numbers one through ten, body parts, and other relevant subjects that young children talk about.  Playing games, learning songs, and listening to French stories reinforce the vocabulary learned.  For these students, evaluation is based solely on how much enthusiasm is put into learning songs and participating in activities.

For students in second and third grade, listening is of the most importance.  At that point, the program focuses mostly on conversational skills and extensive vocabulary such as telling names, age, weather, colors, and numbers to thirty, as well as days, months, and seasons.  Students become very adept at responding to questions such as, how are you? and, what is the weather today?  Oral communication through short dialogs between students is emphasized and therefore enhances their conversational skills.  Repetition is a continuous process of what has been learned through the year and reinforces the proper pronunciation of the language.  At that level, a minimum reading skill is introduced with the basic alphabet sounds, vowels, and combination sounds.  At the end of the quarter, each child is evaluated orally and in writing to asses how much vocabulary he/she has retained and his/her conversational skill level.

The curriculum for fourth through sixth grade is more complex.  The introduction to grammar starts in fourth grade with the learning of the differences in gender in the article, noun, and adjectives, grammar rules, and the importance of accenting words as well as correct usage of idioms.  Oral and written assignments, along with homework, are part of the normal workload for all students in fourth through eighth grade.

In fifth grade, grammar skills are reinforced and expanded.  Students begin to understand how language is structured and how they can use it to express their own needs through the use of regular and irregular verbs in the present tense.  Idioms and common expressions are added to their repertoire as well.  They also learn the difference between the familiar and formal manner in which French speakers address one another.  At this point, all students have a grammatical knowledge of prepositions, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, possessives, and conjunctions.  All materials from previous grades are reviewed.

In sixth through eighth grade, students continually build upon previously acquired vocabulary while incorporating new skills.  The grammar skills become more intensive and their conversational French is more fluent.  New verb tenses are also introduced.  Students learn how to speak and write not only in the present tense but also in the past, future, and imperative forms.  Direct and indirect object pronouns are introduced as well.  Noun-verb agreement, noun-adjective agreement, and proper word order of well-structured sentences are developed.  At this stage, students have the ability to count up to 500 and higher.  They are capable of writing short French compositions.  The French reading skill is much higher.  They can introduce themselves and others while using greetings and farewells appropriately.  Students have a basic appreciation of the diversity of cultures in the French speaking world.  This is learned through cultural videos, readings, plays, food and restaurant vocabulary, and geography.

At the end of eighth grade, students' accents become more refined and their work becomes more mature within the framework of the curriculum.
